The Energy Development Association of Australia (EDAA) is surging ahead in its mission to provide support and leadership to members across the industry.

In January, EDAA successfully lobbied the Electrical Safety Office (ESO) regarding the influx of cheap, imported and non-compliant products.

The ESO has since commenced random visits to stores and warehouses across Queensland searching for unsafe appliances. These searches have resulted in the apprehension of a volume of non-compliant stock from a store in Brisbane.

EDAA President, Peter Cosgrove said, "Our members are reputable companies who operate compliant businesses. It is only fair they are allowed to operate on a level playing field."

"EDAA is building strong associations within the government sector to ensure members have input to affecting legislation," he said.

Safety and energy efficiency continue to be two of the main regulations affecting the industry. The introduction in March 2006 of the Queensland Housing Standards follows on from similar requirements in NSW, Victoria and the ACT. While its initial application predominantly targets new houses, future legislation on home renovations are reportedly up for discussion.

Other such regulations include AS/NZS 3820 - Essential Safety Requirements for Low Voltage Safety Equipment, Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and AS/NZS 3112:2004 - Approval and Test Specification- Plugs and Socket Outlets.

EDAA's specialised panels provide active forums for members to discuss and highlight such regulations or other industry issues or opportunities. Panels include 'Lighting' and 'Retailer and Supplier'. Former EDAA Presidents, Norm Pearce and Ian Broughton are also reforming the Technical and Industrial Panels.

EDAA has also been active in the last year, following some dubious advertised pricing at showground sales. EDAA liaised with the ACCC and the Office of Fair Trading to clarify the requirements of retail advertising. A copy of the ACCC's Guide to Price Comparison Advertising is available from the EDAA office.

EDAA represents retailers, manufacturers and generators of energy products, including large and small appliances, accessories and lighting.

EDAA connects members across the industry providing them with news on pending legislation, advice, resources, programs and key networking opportunities.

EDAA welcome all prospective new members. For more information please contact EDAA Manager, John McNaughton on 0411 474 832.
