The Federal Government is currently reviewing all MEPS and investigating new opportunities.

MEPS currently applies to new products entering the market.
The intent of MEPS is to reduce annual energy consumption and subsequent emissions.
Targeted projections are:
- 2015 - 360 gigawatt hours (GWh) or 300 kt CO2-e
- 2020 - 500 gigawatt hours (GWh) or 400 kt CO2-e
Timeframe Action 2004 Draft Australian Standard to include test method (part 1) and energy performance requirements (part 2)
2005 Publish Australian Standard April 2006 Phase 1 MEPS levels come into force. Phase 2 MEPS levels used as definition of ‘high efficiency’ external power supplies
April 2008 Phase 2 MEPS levels come into force. Phase 3 MEPS levels used as definition
