New Manager for EDAA

After almost four decades in the industry, icon Rex Graham has decided to take on the managerial role of EDAA replacing former manager John McNaughton.

Until recently, Rex was a Betta Stores retailer and BSR Group Director.

Rex spent a significant proportion of his time in the industry as an appliance wholesaler for brands such as Sunbeam, GE, Victa  and Philips.

He also spent about 6 years as assistant Sales Manager for SEQEB stores.

WELS Update

  

1. More inspectors in the field

Now that the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards Act 2005 is in full force an increasing number of WELS inspectors are out in the field checking compliance with the Act.

They are visiting retailers in all states and territories to ensure that products are being correctly labelled prior to supply to consumers.

EDAA Retail Domestic Lighting Course

EDAA's very active Lighting Panel detected a need for a course to inform retail sales staff about the changes in lighting regulation with regards to energy efficiency and  electrical safety.

EDAA assist Queensland Government with fire safety

  

EDAA and the Office of Fair Trading are partnering in a consumer awareness safety campaign to remove old style bar heaters from Queensland homes.

Since July 2002, Queensland Fire Services have been called out to 443 structural fires caused by heating systems, amounting to nearly $9.5 million in property loss

The Federal Government is currently reviewing all MEPS and investigating new opportunities.

MEPS currently applies to new products entering the market.

The intent of MEPS is to reduce annual energy consumption and subsequent emissions.

Industry Warrants Service Technicians

The Energy Development Association of Australia (EDAA) and the Appliance Industry Association (AIA) are concerned a shortage of qualified service agents is affecting the industry's ability to satisfy service warranties.

The EDAA and the AIA met recently to discuss this increasing, industry related issue that could lead to Australia becoming a 'throw away' society of larger electrical appliances such as refrigerators and air conditioners.

Australia hosts International Standby Power Conference

The Australian Government, in conjunction with the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation and the International Energy Agency is hosting a free International Conference on Standby Power in Canberra on 6-7 November 2006.

Industry leaders will outline why reducing standby power is so important to the industry and how a common international approach is the most cost effective mechanism to deliver the reductions sought by governments.

EDAA surges for success

The Energy Development Association of Australia (EDAA) is surging ahead in its mission to provide support and leadership to members across the industry.

In January, EDAA successfully lobbied the Electrical Safety Office (ESO) regarding the influx of cheap, imported and non-compliant products.

Oven Door Safety Standards

As prescribed electrical equipment, domestic ovens require a certificate of approval prior to sale in Queensland.

Ovens are required to comply with AS/NZS3350.2.6 or AS/NZS 60335.2.6, a standard that addresses temperatures, mechanical strength and stability of door when open (for free standing ranges).

Currently, oven door temperatures cannot exceed certain temperature limits. If they do exceed those limits but are within 20 degrees then doors must carry a specific warning... read more
